Budget 2026: fuel duty cut extended to July 2027
The Autumn Budget 2026 keeps the 5p a litre fuel duty cut until July 2027, so duty won’t push petrol and diesel prices up this winter. Where drivers fill up matters more: in Hull, the dearest petrol costs 17.3p a litre more than the cheapest, up to £197 a year. That's more than twice what the duty cut saves.
Prices at 13:33 GMT on 28 October 2026, from the prices retailers report to the government’s Fuel Finder scheme.

What the Budget means for fuel prices
- The 5p a litre cut to fuel duty on petrol and diesel stays until July 2027. It had been due to end on 31 December 2026.
- Duty stays at 52.95p a litre. VAT at 20% is charged on top of the duty and the fuel.
- With VAT, the cut is worth about 6p a litre at the pump: around £68 a year for a petrol car doing 10,000 miles, or £61 for diesel.
- In every city below, the gap between the cheapest and dearest forecourt is bigger than the whole cut.

“The duty decision gets the headlines, but where you fill up can be worth more. In Hull, picking the right forecourt is worth up to £197 a year. Every forecourt’s price is public now, so it takes seconds to check.”
Questions about Budget 2026 and fuel duty
Is fuel duty going up in January 2027?
No. The 5p a litre cut was due to end on 31 December 2026. The Autumn Budget 2026 keeps it until July 2027.
How much is fuel duty now?
52.95p a litre on petrol and diesel, with the 5p cut. VAT at 20% is charged on top of the duty and the fuel.
How much does the 5p fuel duty cut save?
About 6p a litre at the pump once VAT is included: around £68 a year for a petrol car doing 10,000 miles, or £61 for diesel.
Will petrol and diesel prices fall after the Budget?
Keeping the cut stops duty pushing prices up; it doesn’t lower them. Pump prices still follow oil prices and each retailer’s own pricing, which is why the same fuel can cost over 10p a litre more at one forecourt than another in the same city.
How we worked it out
- Prices are the ones retailers report to the government’s Fuel Finder scheme, which pump’d refreshes every hour.
- We only use prices updated in the last 7 days, and leave out motorway services, Costco (members only), closed forecourts and prices that look like mistakes, such as petrol and diesel swapped round or a price more than 3p from the next one.
- Each place is its council area. Derbyshire is Derby and the eight Derbyshire districts; Chesterfield and north Derbyshire is Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Bolsover, Derbyshire Dales and High Peak.
- “Up to, a year” is the gap over 10,000 miles, at 40 mpg for petrol (1,137 litres) or 45 mpg for diesel (1,010 litres). More on how much you could save.
- The cut at the pump is the 5p of duty plus 20% VAT on it: 6p a litre.
